Despite lower incomes, northerners are putting more money aside every week than southerners, according to latest research.

Northerners saved an average of £84 a month during the three months to the end of June, while their southern contemporaries only saved £66, said the Birmingham Midshires building society.

The savings habit in the north is at odds with average earnings of £1,828 a month before tax, £554 less than the £2,382 average earnings in the south.

So it comes as little surprise that Londoners are more spendthrift than any other region in Britain, with 51 per cent of people in the capital saying they had not saved any money in three months.

The Welsh are at the bottom of the savings chart with under £31 saved a month, while people living in Yorkshire saved the most with £105 a month.

The report reveals that men saved £125.62 compared with the £45 women put aside.
